You know when you get used to something and you just do it without thinking? That is sort of where I am with taking pictures. I knew I was missing something but I couldn’t figure out how to fix it so I was frustrated. You are wondering, “Why didn’t you just ask? Isn’t there a camera manual?” I have no answer besides I hate asking for help and I have no idea where the manual is. “Why didn’t you Google it?”
Stop being smarter than my brain- K Thanks!
My issue was APERTURE and I wanted to smack myself because I couldn’t figure it out on my own! Seriously? Am I that dense? Or maybe it just isn’t labeled something that I would recognize on my camera? Who knows but I feel dumb… plain and simple!
Here is a video of how to change it on a Nikon D50. Don’t make the same mistakes as me and look for that damn button on your camera. Shoulda, woulda, coulda- damn, damn, damn.
Why is aperture so important you ask? Why didn’t I figure it out sooner? Well I shoot food and to me food looks better with a shallow depth of field (DOF) because all you are looking at is food. My photography class last week had me shooting a bigger scene and my depth of field was all wrong so my pictures were horrible! I wanted to cry and yes I am being whiny.
This week I went to an amazing event and I would have had a jackpot of a picture IF MY APERTURE WAS NOT 1.8! Damn again! Now this is where is gets all confusing.
- Smaller numbers = shallow DOF, bigger hole and more light
- Bigger numbers = larger DOF, smaller hole and less light
So to get your picture with the right amount of light you need a bigger number/DOF and a slower shutter speed. Which translates to using a tripod in a dark setting or a flash to reduce your shake.
{Insert Michael buying me an external flash, like yesterday!}
That amazing event had THE WORST LIGHTING EVER! It was in a dimly lit room with lots of golds, reds and yellows. When I walked in I knew that I did not have the proper equipment to get anything I would be proud of. So my mission this weekend is to shoot with a bigger aperture and hope things turn out OK. Check out this photography explanation if you are a visual person who wants to understand all of this mumbo jumbo!
If you can’t tell… I am FRUSTRATED at my lack of intelligence!
PS: This is what I saw in my freezer this morning. A hard drive! Really Michael? “Hunny can you get me a Toaster Strudel with a side of hard drive please?!” Only in my house!

Ahahaha! LOL’ing forever at the hard drive in the freezer. Your man must be a computer tech, like mine, because we’ve had a few hard drives in the freezer too.
Thanks for the camera info, too! I’m bookmarking every photography post I run across as I’m upgrading my camera this week. Mine will be a different model and not a DSLR, but it will still be helpful for me to learn as much as I can about various settings, etc. I didn’t even bother doing much research previously because my current camera is very basic and several years old, so it wouldn’t really make a different, LOL.
