What is one of the best things in photography? Using NATURAL LIGHT! Seriously, put your flash away if you are taking product and food shots. No one likes blown out anything but food… it is supposed to look appetizing or your post will fail.
These photos look bad right? Well, let’s just say that I had a deadline the next morning so I was taking pictures at 1am. I know that I am not the only one who gets the most work done in the middle of the night because: normal people sleep at night so your social media/email slows down, the kids are asleep and your spouse isn’t nagging you for attention. 🙂
The above pictures are shot with overhead CFL lights. They are the worst things to take pictures with! The one on the left has a white board behind it and the one on the right just has a shallow depth of field (DOF) to distort the background.
What do they have in common? They look yellow. It doesn’t matter if you have your white balance on auto or incandescent because you could still come out with yellow pictures. There is something for us night owls and it is a free photo editing program called Pixlr! I love it!
Step 1– I always create a new layer because if you mess something up all you have to do is delete the layer.
Step 2– Go to the adjustment menu and find ‘color balance’.
Step 3– Slide the colors until you find the closest to white combination. Too much yellow means you need more blue. Red and green are opposites and too much blue means that your white will be tinted blue in your pictures. This takes trial and error but I promise you that your pictures will improve dramatically if you give it a try.
These are much better! I do not claim to be a professional but I thought that I would share a basic tip because it seriously makes the world of difference. I had no idea that this program existed 1 month ago so I am sure there are others out there just like me. Did I mention that Pixlr was free?!
